A Very Good Gardening Year

The good news is that there is no whining in my annual garden report. Exceptional weather for growing plants and a better team effort have made 2013 a productive year. First we had lots of rain every few days in May and June. It wreaked havoc on our golf, but it made gardening very easy. The rain was followed by lots of sun and high heat--perfect for growing vegetables. In fact, last week it was so hot that any outdoor work had to be done before 8am or after 8pm.

Couple this with the fact that we have not gone away during the peak harvesting times and have been able to stay on top of the produce. Neil has done a terrific job keeping the weeds down, and I have been better at picking things every few days and have given away some of the excess, so there is not so much to freeze.

It’s all about attitude too. I am grateful to have the “free” food and am trying to eat healthier. Last summer, I could stand at my kitchen sink and look out the window at voles running along tunnels on the bank of our garden. This gave me the creeps, for when I stepped into the weed-filled garden, little black furry things ran in all directions. Also, an unfortunate mistake put vine beans among the bush beans, making bean picking an entangled mess. The dreaded Brussels sprouts were omitted from our garden this year. The voles are gone too. Hallelujah! Through experience and compromise, we have achieved a garden that works for us Gardners.

How are the rest of you gardeners doing?

Our garden is also profiting from the heavy rain. Peas were great, cukes are starting to fruit and we're expecting lots and lots of tomatoes. It makes me wish we'd planted more.
