I remember going to my watercolor class thinking that I was done with a painting, only to hear the instructor say, "Well, that's a good start, but you've still got a lot of work to do." So, back to the drawing board.
I often photograph my works in progress, so that I can look back at the earlier stage as a basis of comparison. If the two Bromiliads look alike to you except for the matting, then you're probably not a person who has tried painting. I added a lot of intensity to the color, especially the black background. The brown and green shading on the orange petals was darkened to give the flower a more conical shape. One of the petals was reduced in size, and the plant leaves are more striated.
No doubt my instructor would say that I had more work to do. The comment he often gave me was, "You are seeing something there that I don't see, but that's not necessarily bad." What a nice gentleman. I miss our class and his comments, however enigmatic, and look forward to starting up again in the winter.
