Crotons (watercolor) 2010
Crotons are one of my favorite Florida plants. Unlike most plants, the croton's color is in the leaves rather than the flowers. Native to the South Pacific, they were once a symbol of royalty. Florida is one of the few places in the US where crotons can be grown out of doors. The really flashy colors have been created through hybridizing. The yellow and green leaves are sometimes called Canned Sunshine, and Indian Paintbrush is a common name for the red.
