Facebook: Something for Almost Everyone

Why are you on facebook? Why are you NOT on facebook?

If you do NOT have a facebook account, so be it. It’s not for everyone. Many people tell me they are not on FB because they do not have time to update it. Once you set up an account, there is nothing else that you have to do. However, most people check their FB account several times a day just to see what their friends are doing. Is it a mindless, time-sucking chore? Of course, and it’s highly addictive as well. What I’ve noticed is that people use their FB accounts for many different reasons.

Social Networking. This is why facebook was invented. It all started at Harvard as a way to link with other undergrads. People use FB to stay in touch with friends and family. Some even make plans for parties or weekends together via FB. I teased one young friend who has over 1,000 facebook friends, telling him I had lived in a town with fewer residents than his list of FB friends. He said that it has to do with his business and moving a lot.

Displaying photos. Some people publish a lot of photos of trips or get-togethers or babies. It’s easier than emailing everyone and less intrusive really.

Pushing a social or political agenda. One person I know puts photos of pets up for adoption at the shelter where she is a volunteer and also promotes kindness to animals through her FB posts. Another friend is an advocate for small local businesses. Gay rights and universal health care are also popular causes of note.

Sharing something humorous or interesting. Many a YouTube video that has gone viral was first shared on FB. Honey Badger don’t care, but I do. I enjoy watching videos or reading articles that my friends found to be worth sharing.

Seeking sympathy. Whether one has had a very bad day, an accident, or an illness, mentioning one’s plight on facebook is sure to bring some well-deserved sympathy.

Commenting. Some people do not care to post anything but are loyal commenters on what others post. Isn’t that what we all desire? Attention and a reaction.

Lurking. Still others just read and occasionally “like” a post. That’s okay too.

Linking to a blog. When I write a post on my blog, I put a link on my facebook wall. If I didn’t, I don’t think anyone would read it. I don’t have many FB friends, but at least they are alerted to my latest blog entry. At this point, I write a new post about twice a month, so who would remember to check without a prompt?

I originally joined facebook when I retired. I wanted to keep up with my far-flung family—especially my children in Seattle and New Jersey. I like to see photos of my grandson and my grand kitties. I also like to see the photos of other peoples’ children and grandchildren. With only 50 facebook friends, my wall doesn’t change all that often. So I tell myself—just check it twice a day. Any more often than that would indicate a sign of boredom (or maybe an addiction).

Why do you use facebook? How often do you check it out?
