Cookin’ Up a Storm

Just this weekend I made a vat of vegetable beef soup, a pot of New England fish chowdah, and a casserole of beef stew. Fattening up for the long winter? No-o-o-o. I am trying to use up all of our food before we leave for Florida in December. It finally dawned on me: when you have too many vegetables, make some vegetable soup! This way I can make a dent in some of those frozen veggies from our garden: green beans, carrots, and tomatoes, plus the potatoes and onions in the bin that need to go. So, now I won’t have to worry about cooking for a while with all this food and a potluck supper on Thursday and dinner out on Friday.

Oh, and apples too. I had many not-so-fresh-anymore apples, so I made an apple pie. I took the apples I couldn’t use out to the back yard for the squirrels. Later I saw what I thought was a cow—-white with black spots--out back at dusk. On a closer look, it was an albino deer among a herd of brown deer. Deer like apples too. Alas, our trees only produce fruit every other year, and this is an off year.

What's cookin' at your house?

Lean cuisine. :-) We could use some fresh (or slightly spoiled) veggies at our place!

It seems like I'm constantly trying to empty out the freezer...how does all that stuff get in there, anyway? Soup is the best and highest solution to any number of problems!!

Sounds delicious, Elizabeth! I made ham hock and lima beans in the crockpot, one of my favorites. On Sunday, Bill rotisseried a chicken in our countertop convection oven, and made gravy, red potatoes, and stuffing. I wish I could keep better track of what's in my fridge, but it's hard with a husband who likes to cook and goes to the grocery almost every day. Congrats on having a successful enough garden to have produce to put away. Our garden didn't do well this year.

Cooking and food are a great common denominator. Cara, I wish I could send you some veggies. MB, if I don't use leftovers in a timely manner, they become a frosty, unidentifiable mystery. Robin, you are so lucky to have a husband who loves to cook. I call your hubby the Gadget Guru. I am lucky to have a husband who is very appreciative of my cooking.
