Last week was moving week for the Mountville Library. They moved from the musty, cramped cellar of an office building to a former elementary school that is now a community building. The new location is a big improvement with tall ceilings, lots of windows, and brightly painted walls.
One of the ideas for the move was to involve the children who use the library by giving them a chance to help. The result was a Saturday book parade with families carrying books two blocks from the old building to the new one. Some children decorated their red wagons to fill with books and others put books inside the baskets on their bikes.
I found it very hard to believe that the move was completed in just one week. Shelves had to be dismantled and new equipment was installed. Books were packed in banana boxes, transported, and unpacked. Literally hundreds of volunteers were needed to make this possible. I worked just one long afternoon and brought my friend Edna to help. We packed the final boxes of books from the old library.
Today I volunteered at the "new" library. Everything was in place, and we were very busy with families who came in to see the building and to pick up books for summer vacation. The librarians had received grant money to buy new furniture and educational toys for the children's area as well as a special built-in corner for story telling. What a feeling of pride the patrons seemed to have in their new community library. It was wonderful.

What a great story! It must be very satisfying to be part of such a community effort, not to mention part of a community that values reading and volunteer participation.
