A Visit to White Barn Farm

Last week we stopped in Wrentham, MA to visit some friends on a family farm. The house, barn, and land have been in the family for many generations, but it has in recent years been turned into an organic farm run by the owner's granddaughter. The place is now called White Barn Farm and includes farm fields and a farm stand where organic vegetables and flowers are sold.

Running the farm is a three-generation family affair. Christy and Chris are the farmers. Eliot and Will are the fix-it guys who tinker with all the equipment. Mary Alice answers the phone and keeps everyone in line. The fields are beautifully hoed by machine and bugs are arduously hand picked off the plants. Many helping hands are needed on market days to get the CSA boxes ready for patrons to pick up. It is amazing what Christy and Chris have accomplished, turning the former hay fields into a very productive and flourishing organic farm. I was so inspired by their efforts and enthusiam that I thinned out the carrots and the onions in our garden today.

Farming must be to gardening as comedy is to puns (or something like that). Hard work is a pleasure in itself, but only if you have the right attitude. Hmmm, gives new meaning to Attitude Adjustment Hour...
