Wild stampede in downtown Delray!
In the middle of January, Delray Beach holds an arts festival for the weekend, shutting down Atlantic Avenue from Route 1 to the beach. Picture the Long's Park Arts and Crafts Festival on the main street of town. The many blocks covered with 250 artist's booths include the draw bridge over the intercoastal waterway. The bridge opens twice an hour to let tall ships pass and halts pedestrian traffic for a while.
My favorite part of the festival is the Florida water color artists. I love to see what they can do. Most focus on the beautiful plants and water birds of south Florida. Their amazingly detailed pictures are so labor intensive that they have all started selling giclee prints of the originals which would be prohibitive in price. Giclee prints are high quality limited edition prints. Typically, it might take six weeks to complete one large water color painting. I enjoyed talking to the artists who generously shared some of their favorite tips.

That looks like a really interesting festival. Did you buy any prints? I've been tempted, then thought I should really get an original, then ended up with ... nothing. When the snow melts and the artists come out of their dens, we'll see!
Oh, no, I didn't even buy a print because the ones I really liked were well into the hundreds of dollars. I have my own art work hanging on the walls of our condo. My plan is to change the pictures that I have framed with better ones as I do more watercolor paintings. That's assuming a lot, isn't it?
Really enjoyed reading about the Delray Festival. It's 20 degrees here today and I am so envious...but March 7 is just around the corner!
