Reflections on a Blah Birthday

Birthday number 61 is quite dull compared to turning 60 when we rented a house on the beach in Emerald Isle, NC for 10 people. It’s a quiet birthday with no 21-gun salute, no nifty 50, and no 76 trombones. It’s not a birthday worthy of a cake or even a pie, well, maybe just a frosted donut. It’s not yet time for social security, and in many cases, I’m still too young to be considered a senior. On the other hand, I’m happy to have lived this long, and I’m lucky to be healthy and married to a great guy. This past year brought our first grandbaby! We are able to travel and play golf and, best of all, spend time with family and friends.

What’s next?!?

One year has passed since I officially launched my blog. I started on my 60th birthday and vowed to blog once a week for a year. Did I accomplish my goal? Not exactly. I did not post each week as planned, but I did write 52 posts during this time—basically, whenever I had something to say. It’s the same thing—more or less. I truly enjoyed the process of writing my thoughts and figuring out how best to illustrate them with digital photos. My one big disappointment is that I elicited very little response in terms of comments.

Now the question is where to go from here. I definitely want to continue writing, but I feel no pressure to stay on the one week/one blog post target. I intend to write about whatever interests me at the moment. I hope to evoke more responses, but I am not sure how. Perhaps I should choose more controversial topics or viewpoints or even more evocative titles: Sex after Sixty or Tea Party Hussies or Girls Gone Wild. I’d rather be hated than ignored. So, if there are still any readers out there, watch for an occasional doozy among the gentle blog posts. And for those among you who knew my dear departed friend Sally, ask yourselves, “WWSD?” You know that she’d have a hay day with my blog, teasing and making fun of me. (“Aren’t you taking yourself a bit too seriously, Elizabeth?”) That’s OK too.

[Remember you have to start a google account to post on my blog.]

Hi, Beth!! I'm making a comment!! I hope I'm able to complete it correctly. Actually, I've tried to comment before, but was unsuccessful probably due to my innate stupidity. I enjoyed reading your birthday blog. Even though you say your birthday was blah, I know your life is far from it. The golf holiday sounds like it was wonderful. You always find delightful groups of people to hang with. And your upcoming trip should be a perfect belated birthday present. I can't wait to read your blog about that!! Now, time for me to change the kitty litter!! :-) Have a good Friday!!

Hi Elizabeth,
Happy belated birthday--so sorry I missed it!

I am a devoted reader even though I am not a devoted commenter. I read every week and look forward to seeing what my dear friend has to say! Keep it up!

I don't know you, but I've been reading your nice smug little blog for a while now. You want more comments? Here's what you should do. More angst, less joy. Let people know what your really like.

How nice that a complete stranger would take the time to leave a rude comment....she does not realize you have more joy than angst. I enjoyed your birthday post.

Everbody has ups and downs, but I like the life you talk about! We meant to talk about sex at our 60th birthday...but we forgot. Hmmm. I think we better brush up on our Hussy-ness! Outfits by Caryl?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Only a month late til I read your blog!
Every time I have read your blog I have enjoyed it. Since I only read my email and work on my own computer on the weekends I tend to get behind (I only have 5300+ unread emails!) Today is William's birthday - you were such a good friend to have at that time and in the years since! Take care of yourself now that you are the big 61 (I will be there soon enough - I think I am just about the oldest one teaching at my school!) Keep writing so I can catch up with you now and then.
