It's all over now except for the tomatoes and the peppers. I dug the last of the carrots today, and the acorn squash are all in. Yea! It has been a stellar year for tomatoes, so I am making tomato soup, tomato pie, and salads along with any other tomato recipe I can find. Anyone have a favorite recipe using slicing or cherry tomatoes?
We have had surprisingly little interference from varmints this year. I attribute this to our brilliant diversionary tactic of sacrificing all of the fruit of two apple trees, a peach tree, and blueberry bushes to the birds, squirrels, deer, etc. Not to mention our fence and our well-stocked birdfeeder. Despite making short trips to New England, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia, we haven't made any long trips away from home this spring and summer. Staying put always helps in keeping up with the garden. So after I clean, chop, and freeze or store what is pictured below, I'm almost done except for a few more tomatoes and peppers. It has been a very good year.

It's a lot of work...but don't you just love your own vegetables? They're so tender, they feel so wholesome. One of my biggest problems is thinning. I can't stand to throw out such cute baby carrots. On the other hand, now I have over 100 really small carrots. Maybe next year I'll learn some ruthlessness. In the meantime - enjoy yourself!
