Mission of Hope

Last summer I participated in a fund raiser for Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center by conducting an interview and writing a chapter in a book. Many local writers had gathered to learn about the project, and most volunteered to interview a staff member, alumni, or client of Schreiber. The resulting book, titled Mission of Hope, celebrates this wonderful institution’s 75th anniversary.

During our initial meeting and tour of the center, I learned that Schreiber is a place for physical and occupational therapies and even has a pre-school for children with special needs. Originally founded in 1936, as Lancaster County Society for Crippled Children, it became affiliated with PA Easter Seal Society in 1949. Named for its first executive director, Edna Schreiber, a nurse and physical therapist, this institution services thousands of Lancaster area children facing childhood disabilities. The dedicated staff and volunteers of Schreiber make this facility a place of hope for achieving far-reaching goals.

My assignment was to interview a 16-year-old girl who had attended Schreiber Rehab since she was 18 months old. The only other information I had before I contacted her for an interview was that she had had a traumatic leg amputation. Meeting this courageous young woman and her family, conducting the interview, and piecing together the chapter, titled “We Choose Life,” were all parts of a very challenging and rewarding experience.

[If any readers would like to learn more about this book or my chapter, please let me know.]

I would love to read your chapter, preferably in its entirety. It's intriguing that a person could start rehab basically before they could talk! Maybe you could incorporate the chapter in to the blog, or send a link? It sounds like an interesting subject and an interesting story!
