You Go, Girl!

My friend Edna is an outstanding member of our ladies' golf league. For as long as I can remember, she has volunteered to do the golf handicapping at the end of every day of league play. Others volunteer to help for a month of Thursdays, but Edna comes early and stays late every single time we play. Then she faithfully calls the sports desk of the local paper to report the week’s winners.

Edna took up golf at age 65. Just last year she reluctantly gave up walking the nine holes and started riding in a golf cart because she got too tired. Her enthusiasm for the game and for the companionship of the women in our league has not wavered a bit. It is no secret that on her golf balls, she prints the motivational saying, “Go girl!” About eight years ago, our league started the “Go Girl” award in her honor for the person who shows the most enthusiasm for the game. Edna received the trophy the first year, and now half a dozen others have received this award.

Many of you may think Edna is remarkable for playing golf as a senior. That is only a part of what she does. Years ago she worked as a baby nurse. She would temporarily live with wealthy Philadelphia families taking care of their newborn babies. After raising her own son, her next career was taking care of elderly folks who needed extra help at home. Finally, she took care of her own husband who passed away several years ago. Today Edna works as a greeter at a primary school four days a week. She opens the door to let the early arrivals in. Security is tight at schools these days. Anyone whom she does not recognize, goes through the office. In addition to her paid job, Edna takes an exercise class at our community sports complex several days a week. Every year, Edna’s son, a retired college professor, takes Edna out to breakfast for her birthday--on his motorcycle!

Yesterday we recognized this outstanding member of our golf league on her 93rd birthday. Two of our members organized a celebration and surprised Edna with a tree and plaque and birthday cake after golf. She could not have been happier with the little cherry tree planted between the first and second holes of our local golf course. The plaque that is next to it reads, ”To Honor Edna, our inspirational ‘Go Girl,’ 2011 Ladies 9-hole Golf League.” And what an inspiration she is.
