Each month in the winter Delray Beach holds a street festival. Among the most popular, attracting tens of thousands of people to Downtown Delray, occurs in the middle of February. It celebrates one of the most widely loved and used foods in the world--GARLIC! Patterned after a similar festival in Gilroy, California, it is Delray's annual fundraiser for 15 non-profit organizations.
Anyway, it is an occasion for music (including a Grateful Dead tribute band), food, rides, and all kinds of booths for shopping, but food is the focus, and garlic is the star. In fact, chefs on Gourmet Alley turn 8,000 pounds of garlic into hundreds of different recipes. You can find these treats: Gilroy garlic bread, roasted corn dipped in garlic butter, garlic crab cakes, chicken garlic pannini, roasted garlic pizza, and yes, even garlic ice cream, just to name a few. Local chefs compete in cooking demonstrations, and there is an annual garlic recipe cookbook.
The Garlic Fest's slogan is "It's chic to reek in Delray Beach."
