A Good Golf Day

Today I won a small, local golf tournament. In many ways, it was a fluke. I had not signed up for the tournament but was asked at the last minute to fill in for someone else. So, by a slim one-point margin, I beat two of my golfing friends for the ladies' prize. On a par 66 course, I won with a score of 95. This is quite possibly the highest score ever for a tournament win, but it was the lowest score of all the ladies in the event. The men's winner shot a 64. I am greatly humbled.

However, the Big Winner of the day was my friend and teammate Gina who shot a hole-in-one on a prize hole. Not only did she win a season's pass but also a trip to one of 6 locations across the US for 2 days of PGA lessons! No one could be more deserving of this exciting win. Gina is a breast cancer survivor who has enthusiastically chaired a Rally for the Cure event at our township course for 5 years. More than $30,000 has been raised for breast cancer research thanks to her effort and determination. Everyone at the course today was thrilled to see Gina win her well-deserved prize.

BTW, I also won a prize for longest drive on a par five hole where women were given a 100-yard advantage over the men. Afterwards, I asked my friends, "Do you think they expected a man to win the prize for longest drive?"

"Why?"

"Well, because the prize is a gift certificate to a hardware store!"

I think I hit the nail on the head. Women rule.
